The options for bathrooms at the University of Michigan-Flint has gone from the usual men's and women's rooms to include a third choice -- unisex.
With every major renovation on campus, a unisex bathroom will be added. The campus is now up to two – one in French Hall built in 2007 and another in the Northbank Center that was put in over the summer.

As of November, Germany will be the first country in Europe to offer a "third gender" distinction on its birth certificates.
A new German law stipulates that children who are born of indeterminate gender no longer have to be categorized as "male" or "female." Instead, parents can choose to leave the space blank on their child's birth certificate, according to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Those individuals can eventually decide whether to identify as male, female or neither.

Julia Serano occupies a rarified place in the world of trans woman authors. Her first book, “Whipping Girl: a Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity,” laid bare the bigotry and misogyny behind the marginalization of transgender women in our culture.
Released in 2007, and written in language both academic and fiery, the book felt foundational on arrival and has only grown in stature. I’m not alone among trans women I know in feeling it changed how I view my identity.
